Saturday, September 23, 2023Comparing Estimates for Fire Damage Restoration
By the RestorationSOS Educational Staff
Fire is every property owner's nightmare. No one particularly enjoys the thought of their home or livelihood or possessions going up in smoke and precautions should always be taken to help prevent fires from occurring in the first place. Should the worst case scenario happen, however, it becomes important for property owners to make wise decisions regarding the repair and restoration of their home or business in the aftermath of fire damage.
When fire damage occurs, it is important to act quickly to avoid further damage or long-term issues. But acting quickly does not mean making rash decisions. The worst decisions are usually those that are made in a hurry and your home is much too valuable to allow that to happen.
Where to Begin
You will need to hire a qualified fire damage restoration company to do the work on your home, but resist the urge to hire the first one you come across, even if they appear qualified for the job and their prices are reasonable. It is recommended that you obtain at least three estimates or quotes from service providers before making any sort of decision or signing any contract.
A word of caution – be sure to obtain estimates even if the damage is covered by your insurance. Many times the insurance provider vendor is not the best option since they may have the insurance company's best interests at heart, not necessarily yours.
How to Choose a Restoration Company
You will want to compare the estimates, coupled with the level and variety of services that are offered. You want to make sure the company you hire provides the necessary services to work on your home. Many people make the cost the deciding factor in who they hire. This is not the suggested course in this area of service, since the adage "you get what you pay for" certainly applies and your home and possessions are too valuable to trust to the lowest bidder.
Sometimes it may be preferable to pay a little more for someone who can provide same-day emergency service as opposed to saving a little bit and having the work delayed. The one exception would be large-scale natural disasters, such as forest fires that affect your home, in which case it may be better to get whoever can service your home the fastest since stabilizing the property following a disaster is highest priority.
So get at least 3 estimates from different restoration companies, compare quotes, and hire the one that is best qualified to work on your home, with a price range somewhere between the highest and lowest offerings. RestorationSOS® is one of the largest fire damage restoration companies in the country, and provides up to 3 free estimates from our network of qualified, independent, and thoroughly screened contractors.
