There are various disaster scenarios that can happen in a university and one of the most common emergencies involves water. A university consists of different types of buildings used for different purposes so the dangers of water damage in this type of institution are varied. For instance, the type of water damage that would occur in a library or in an administrative office could be very different from one that would happen in a lecture hall or a gymnasium.

However, there are certain risks that all students, faculty and staff face during water emergencies, particularly risks to personal safety. Severe water intrusion may cause damage to structures, making a building unsafe. Wet, slippery floors and tiles that may have come loose can also cause injuries. In addition, there is always a risk of electric shock in any flooded room or area. Serious health risks are also present if the water contains sewage or other contaminants.

In addition, there are secondary damages that may occur when water-damaged buildings and materials are not properly cleaned or thoroughly dried such as oxidation, rotting and other issues. Also, if the level of humidity or moisture in an affected building is not corrected, there is a likelihood of mold and mildew growth.
